Winter

Install a programmable thermostat. Automatically controls the heat when you are sleeping or away from home.

Check home to see if cold air is getting into your home. Additional insulation may be required if your home is drafty. Contact your state energy office, or local utility company to see if they perform energy audits.

Use drapes. Where windows face the sun, keep drapes open during sunlight hours and closed during the evening and nighttime.

Repair windows. Seal cracks in panes and tighten up loose windows with weather stripping.

Install storms windows. Remember to close them up when the winter begins. They also help prevent moisture from collecting in the windows.

Close storm doors. Seal air leaky by caulking and weather stripping.
Curb fireplace costs. Have a professional chimney sweep clean and inspect your fireplaces annually.
